Music video

1) Research: music videos

You need to write a 150-word close-textual analysis of SIX music videos that will inform your production work. The music videos you analyse are up to you but focus on a different aspect of media language for each one (see guidance below).

Music videos

Music Video 1: Narrative
How is narrative used in the music video and what impact does this have on the audience? Can you apply any narrative theories to the story in the music video?

The song All too well by Taylor Swift was a story her feeling and emotions after a break up; about two young people falling in love but eventually the relationship and love faded leaving her feeling hurt, finally ending with a scene of her being sucessful with him not by her side yet outside watching her success in secret with regret and guit. The narrative makes the audience feel empathy towrds the chracters.

Music Video 2: Camerawork (shots, angles, movement)
Look for particular camera shots and movement - remember that movement is a critical convention of most music videos and camerawork can contribute to this.

lil Dicky-earth is the music video that has lots of camera movements and fast camera movements to show the rapid growth of the Earth changing,
The pace of the camera slows down when showing beautiful nature. However, the pace increases when showing the risks and harm. Humans do  to show a negative effect. They use lots of transitioning to show lots of different scenes and environment.

Music Video 3: Mise-en-scene

The song Last Frday Night by Kate Perry uses Mise-en-scene to represnt her glow up throught the music video. This is done by the use of the elaborate colours and costumes used throught the video. The multiple props and costume swithces, for exapmle the big braces , messy hair and unfallltering makeup. All this chnages by the end of the  video ,where evryone starts to look at her and admire her beauty due to her chnaged apperence. She chnages from place to place as at the start of the video she is in her room by herself , however by the end of the msuic video she is in her living room partying with loud music with many other people.

Music Video 4: Editing

The song by taylor swift bad Blood is fast and qucik paced showing violenece and the power she holds throughot the music video.IT can classified as an action sci-fi.Action sci fi includes voilenece , invested weapons and gun play wich is also showacased in her music video.THrough the whole vdeo she fights againts other charcaters and includes alot of action and fast paced .

Music Video 5: Conventions
Think back to our Introduction to Music Video and our work on Andrew Goodwin's theory on music video conventions as part of the Ghost Town CSP. How many key conventions of music video can you find in your fifth music video example?
Uptown funk by Mark funson and bruno mars has a light colour theme giveing summer vibes also represtning joy amd going again st make stretotypes as bruno mars was wearing the colur pink, which was normalised for oly women to wear such colurs. To show it was a instrumental music vidoe they performed with a lot of movement to have flow.

Music Video 6: Visual effects, intertextuality or product placement
Choose a video that has interesting visual effects or intertextuality and analyse the effect this creates and how it is constructed. Alternatively, you could look at product placement here and see how a band or artist has incorporated a brand or product into their video.

The song make you mine by Maddison beer which has interesting visual effects, as they tried to recreate the american high school theme. they had costumes to represent the high school cheerleaders and to represent the teenage life.

You can find a range of notable music video examples in this blogpost
or you are free to select videos of your choice. You may wish to write more about one video than another but as long as you have 800+ words of music video research in total you will be fine. Feel free to use bullet points if this is helpful.

2) Planning: music video treatment

A treatment is like a script for a music video - it tells the band or artist exactly what will happen in the video and the kind of style or effect the video will have. You'll need choose what song you are going to use at this point - remember, you can use an existing artist's work but it needs to be appropriate for the brief.

You can find further music video treatment guidance here plus an example of a genuine director's treatment for the brilliant alt-J video Breezeblocks

For this aspect of your summer project, write a basic treatment that gives your reader a good idea of what your three-minute video will look like. The most important thing is to keep in mind the brief - the music video must feature the artist or band (likely to be a performance element) plus a focus on footwear for the sponsorship deal specified in the brief.

Start your treatment with the following key details:

1) Artist/band and song you will use for your video

Godspeed, by Frank Ocean, which is a R&B genre music, going to use him as an influence to create my own artist called Will Brown. Frank Ocean is one of the most popular R&B artist in 2024. The narrative in Godspeed is about a couple facing issues and resulting them to have a major issue by the end.

2) Original name for artist/band you have created - MUST be completely original

For example, Ed Sheeran - Shape of You is the artist and song you plan to use but your original name for your artist will be John Smith - Shape of You.

The original name of the artist called Frank Ocean, who sang Godspeed, and I have created an original name, For my music video which is Will Brown Who will be Telling his POV Of the Toxic relationship.

3) Statement of Intent

Write the first draft for your genuine 500-word Statement of Intent. This will be submitted to the exam board alongside your media products and is worth 10 marks of the overall 60 marks available.

The original AQA brief is here: NEA Student Booklet - Brief 4.

We also strongly recommend you look at our Statement of Intent questions to consider document too (you'll need to log in with your Greenford Google account to read this).

This is just your first draft of the statement so try and keep it under 500 words if you can. That will leave a bit of room to add later when you do your next draft.

The existing I will use for my music video is Frank Ocean which is his artist name however, his full name is Christopher Edwin Breaux. He is an American singer, who mostly does R&B genre music he has many albums such as blonde, channel orange and many more he’s 36 years old born on 28 October 1987 Frank Ocean began to sing and released his first song, reminder on January 1, 2010. The song I picked from Frank Ocean It’s called Godspeed, which was released in 2016. The original name I created for my artist is called Will Brown, which was influenced and created by the existing artist, Frank Ocean. The footwear brand I will use for the sponsorship element is for asylum, I will have the logo at the beginning and the end of the video And also showed the actual product in the music video, as it will be gifted from one character to another. The name of the original music magazine I created is called Inside, which would also consider a contact page at the end, which is my page future which list topics related to music and different type of genres and music Artist, awards and nomination.

My music video will meet the brief as my music video will be three minutes long which will also have a narrative with performance having a range of camera work and different lighting to represent the feelings of the character and my characters will also have costumes that will change throughout the video to represent that in a feelings For example, at the beginning The couple will be burning bright summer clothes, however, towards the end, it would change to Dark winter clothes to represent the less effort put in and how the relationship is going downwards . For the lighting, I would use neon purple blue red pink LED light to represent the R&B genre. I would use several locations to show the timeline moving fast as they have been to Many locations together. well, the music magazine my front cover will have a picture with The name of the magazine on the centre of the page, which for also have an original photo , On the side of the centre picture, I would have cover lines to attract the audience and my additional page is going to be a content page which will have topics related to music listed and various music, artist, showcasing, nominations and awards.

My music video will challenge  stereotypes in Medium mainstream as most movies or short clips represent or showcase. The girls point of view in a break up. However, in my music video I’m showing the point of view of the males Emotions and feelings which subverts stereotypes.

My  audience is mainstream music fans and will be psychographics as they will be aspires, and

4) Ignite presentation

Prepare a 5-minute, 20-slide presentation using the Ignite format in which you present your coursework project. In effect, this is your statement of intent in presentation format. You must cover:
  • Your music video and music magazine concept: your new original artist, genre, song and music video treatment. Then, your print brief: music magazine title, double page feature, additional page, photoshoot etc.
  • Media language: how you will use music video conventions and music magazine conventions - e.g. camerawork, editing and mise-en-scene to create meanings for your audience.
  • Media representations: how you will use or subvert stereotypes in your music video and music magazine; applications of representation theory; social and cultural contexts - how your coursework will reflect contemporary media culture and society.
  • Media audiences: your target audience demographics and psychographics; audience pleasures - why they would enjoy your music video and magazine; audience theory if relevant.
  • Media industries and digital convergence: the potential record company that would promote your band or artist; the publisher for your music magazine; the brand identity for your artist; how fans would engage with your products etc.
Ignite presentations have very specific rules: you must create exactly 20 slides with each slide set to 15-second auto-advance. This means your presentation will be exactly five minutes followed by questions and comments from the class. You will deliver your presentation on your coursework planning in the first week back in September.

Your Ignite presentation will be marked out of 30 on the following criteria (each worth a possible 5 marks):

1) Research (through the presentation AND your blog - make sure it is posted before you present)
2) Coursework concept
3) Language: terminology and theory
4) Representations / social and cultural contexts
5) Audience and Industry / digital convergence
6) Presentation delivery
