preliminary exercise

1) State the song you have chosen for your preliminary exercise.

Frank ocean- Godspeed.

2) Choose at least three music videos similar to your concept and watch a clip or more from each. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing and mise-en-scene.

  • The song All too well by Taylor Swift was a story her feeling and emotions after a break up
  • "I Will Always Love You" is a song by American singer-songwriter Whitney Houston
  • "Someone like You" is a song recorded by English singer-songwriter Adele.

3) Write a short music video treatment for your extract (this is basically a script for your music video). You can find an example of a treatment here. If you are making your real coursework then feel free to use the treatment from your summer project.

scene 1: a close up of the girls face, waiting inside a hospital waiting room.
The first camera shot is the view of the hospital from the outside with hospital emergency noises, while the guy waits outside it, the the second shot is a close up shot of the girls face with bruises and a tear drop.

scene2: this is when it transitions into the flash back of the couple having a great time with closeup shots, the couple in a restaurant, car, park then the camera will widen out when showing the toxic parts, them yelling at each other.

scene3: the last scene is back to reality of the couple sitting further away from each other and stares into space.

4) Write a shot list containing EVERY shot you plan to film AND additional shots to create flexibility when editing (in a music video you will find you need FAR more shots than you think, particularly close-ups). These additional shots can be close-ups, alternative angles or something more creative. I advise using a simple table on Microsoft Word/Google Docs to set out your shot list - you can find an example here (this is from narrative filmmaking but the same format can be used for any video project)

  1. close up of the girls bruised face
  2. close up of the guys guilty face with tears
  3. closeup of the couple smiling
  4. the close up of the girls reaction when they argue and gets scary
  5. close up of the guys face when she ends up on the floor with blood.
  6. close up of the girls face with blood.
5) Plan your mise-en-scene: what iconography are you including to ensure your audience understands the genre and style of your artist? Plan your settings, costume, make-up, props and lighting.

  • the costume will represent the RnB colours like purple
  • the make up will be on the girl when she is bruised
  • make up on the girl and guy when it starts to get toxic, ill put dark under eyes to show they are tired.
  • setting: park, restauranthospital

6) Plan a shooting schedule that will ensure everything is filmed by the deadline. Include when, where, who is required, planned equipment and any other aspects you need to arrange.

30/09/24 shoot the scene when they are chilling together with people around and to show that the girl feels isolated.
02/10/24 film the rest in the hospital and park.
